how it works
Write the math. The units work themselves out.
Type quantities with their units and build equations the way you would on paper. Here is what Mathora does with them, step by step.
- 01
Multiply and divide
Units combine with the numbers, cancel, and simplify on their own, down to the named unit you would expect.
- kg·m/s² becomes newtons, N·m becomes joules
- Powers and fractions of units are handled the same way
- Prefer another unit? Click it to change it
F = 2.5 kg × (4 ms)²2 × 0.5 m = 40 N
- 02
Add and subtract
Compatible units line up automatically, even when they are written differently.
- Prefixes and systems mix freely: metres with centimetres or inches
- The result comes back in a sensible unit
- No manual conversion before you add
12 ms + 36 kmh = 22 ms
2 m + 6 in = 2.15 m
- 03
Catch mistakes
Quantities that can’t mix are flagged the moment you type them, on the line that caused it.
- The message names both dimensions involved
- Conversions between unrelated quantities are stopped too
- Temperatures are strict, so you never add two absolute values by accident
6 N·m2 s + 4 kg
✗ power and mass can’t be added
- 04
Convert to anything
Click a unit to switch it. Only compatible units are offered, and the quantity stays the same.
- Yes, even furlongs per fortnight. I hate you if you use these units
- Temperatures convert as offsets, not ratios
- Every result can show a different unit for the same value
60 mih = 161,280 furlongfortnight
- 05
Carry it through
Every result keeps its unit into the next equation, so a whole chain of calculations stays consistent.
- Name a quantity once and reuse it in later lines
- Change one input and everything downstream updates
- Units are re-checked at every step
F = 2.5 kg × 9.81 m/s² = 24.5 N
W = F × 3 m = 73.6 J
P = W / 4 s = 18.4 W
